Streetcar Art

Friday, June 27 is going to be a busy day. Not only is it the day for the YLC’s Streetcar Summer Flip-Flops and Fizz Crawl, but a number of new streetcars will be placed throughout the city. Look for new streetcars (hopefully all our information is correct; we will update as necessary) at:

• One Shell Square, 701 Poydras. By Ya-Ya/Rontherin Ratliff, (title coming soon).
• “They All Ask for You,” by artist John Lamouranne and sponsored by Postlethwaite & Netterville, at Place St. Charles, 201 St. Charles, at the corner of Gravier.
• In front of Harrah’s New Orleans Casino on Canal Street will be Chris Kaiser’s streetcar “Big Money;” it’s also sponsored by Harah’s.
• “Superior Spirit” by Victor Ortiz will be installed at Superior Grill, the car’s sponsor; at 3636 St. Charles, in front of restaurant on the sidewalk at the corner of St. Charles and Antoine.

There are some tentative plans on installing two others on Friday; we’ll wait for more information before posting.

Reading The Times Picayune‘s Inside Out this Saturday, I feel instantly in love with a mailbox they showcased.  I had to see it for myself.  So after driving around town for two days, I found it!  And here it is.  Isn’t it the best mailbox ever?

This Saturday, June 28 is the celebration of the streetcar returning to its complete route! A Streetcar Named Inspire will have a streetcar painted by the RTA employees (who paint the actual streetcars) on the corner of Claiborne & Carrollton for the celebration.  We need about 3-4 volunteers to help with set up from 7:30-10:00 a.m. or 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Join the Young Leadership Council Friday, June 27 in the Gallery Lounge of the Le Pavillon Hotel for the Streetcar Summer Flip-Flops and Fizz Crawl! The crawl will begin at 6:00 p.m. After enjoying cool libations at special prices, the group will roll out to take a tour of streetcars that have been placed!

The Streetcar Named Inspire Project needs volunteers to become “Streetcar Conductors.”   Each conductor will adopt a streetcar to monitor. Conductors are responsible for visiting and inspecting their streetcar twice a month to ensure its welfare. Streetcars in need of special attention will be reported back to project leaders.  This important responsibility will ensure that the streetcars are well maintained so that they can continue to be enjoyed by the people of New Orleans.
